What is weighing you down?

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:1‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/heb.12.1.nlt

I’ve lost 40 lbs over the past 18 months. I’m pretty proud of that. I’m more excited that it’s been 18 months. It started with a resolution to improve my A1C and get off some of diabetic medicine. I no like Myers have to do wow my insulin and dropped a couple other medicines. I’m not the only one to lose a lot of weight. Steph is matching me and several of our friends have lost over 100 lbs. I feel better and that is always a bonus. Sticking to a diet is not always easy, but I have made it part of my daily routine and it’s not been too difficult. I am amazed that I have stuck with it for over a year and I praise God for his help!

Right now I am trying to strip off all the baggage, losing the weight  that keeps me from a closer relationship with the Lord. All my efforts are to work on my weaknesses and the sin that "so easily trips us up". Simplifying my life, removing the clutter of busyness, and making sure all I do is for God's glory and not my own, is part of my goal. This Blog helps me do that in a small way. I feel it is so important for me to internalize God's word, to think about it, to meditate upon it, and to apply it to my day. So, I blog and pray about my readings. I try to use what I have read throughout my day. It really makes scripture come to life in my journey with the Lord. What weighs you down? What is keeping you from a deeper relationship with the Lord?  What is keeping you from living a life that is pleasing to the Lord?

Dear Lord, My life is yours, all of it. I pray your strength and wisdom to use every moment I have to further your kingdom. Help me strip the weight of this world away from my daily routine. Help me to center my life on you. I know I have weaknesses and sin that keep me from doing your will. Please strip those things from my life. I praise you for all you have done for me and want nothing more than to serve you. Amen!

Indeed, we all make mistakes!

James 3:2 -Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

I know this is not news to many of you, but I make mistakes. I am FAR from perfect and I have major flaws. This is one of my worst. I guess you could say I am blunt, to the point, when it comes to speaking my mind. SOOOO, many times that gets me in trouble. You always know what I am thinking. I wear my emotions out for all to see and usually my tongue leaves no doubt. Even with the ones I love, sorry honey!

My mom always said, if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all. Well, I spend a lot of time being quiet. I guess that is the way I have dealt with a "wagging tongue". That also is not the best method. If I am truly trying to share the love of Jesus, I need manage my words. I need to do this with strangers, coworkers, friends and, most importantly, with my family. I would say even more so with my lovely wife. She has learned to tolerate my moods, my eye rolls, and definitely my words. She has dealt with my sarcasm, my curtness, and my rage at times. I am blessed to have an angel for a wife that really loves me. She loves me so much, she puts up with my major flaws and see right through them.

I need to do better!

Dear Lord, Help me to manage my words, my attitudes, and my emotions. I know with your power and wisdom, I can conquer my tongue and defeat satan that likes to use it for his purposes. I don't want to praise you out of the same mouth that is harsh to others. Forgive me Lord when my mouth does not share your love, grace, and mercy. I truly love you, even when my words don't speak that love. I praise you for your patience with me and am humbled by your love.

What did you do this weekend?

James 2:19-20  -- 19You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
2:19 Some manuscripts read that God is one; see Deut 6:4.
Summer is officially here. The 2017-2018 school year is behind us and I am blessed to be able to spend this Memorial Day weekend camping in the new home. I have been busy. I fixed a leak, hooked up the washer/dryer, installed the motorcycle wheel chock, and a few other small details to make our NEW HOME feel like home.  But, I really didn't do much this weekend for the Lord. It was all about me and us. I guess it's ok to do that once in a while. It can easily become an every day occurence.

What did you do this weekend to put your faith into action?

All the bible reading, devotionals, and YES prayers are to no avail if I do no put my faith in Christ into action! The Lord has called us to Go into all the world, make disciples, baptize, and teach them. This GREAT COMMISSION is filled with ACTION words. Go, make, baptize, teach, are all calls to put our faith into good deeds for the Kingdom. We can't just go about our daily activities without building them around Christ. We have to take action, serve others, and love. Life is not about us, it's about serving the Lord in EVERYTHING we do.

Dear Lord, Forgive me for the times I just think about myself and when my focus is not on your kingdom. You have called me to action for serving you and many times I forget. Fill me with your spirit. Help me to see places to put that faith into good deeds and serving others. I love you Lord and praise you today and always. Amen!

Mr. Hospitality

Hebrews 13:1-2  1Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters.13:1 Greek Continue in brotherly love. 2Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!

I am sure no one has every referred to me as MR. HOSPITALITY. Maybe it's just me but I think the art of Hospitality is quickly becoming a lost art. We've never really opened our home to visitors. I am not really sure why. Now that we are downsizing and moving into a "tiny home", I am not sure that will change.

Opening up your home is just one way to show hospitality to others. The key is in verse one. "Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters." We need to constantly be on the look out for way of treating others with great love and kindness. That is true hospitality. You don't have to open your home to strangers, although this is the ultimate example of hospitality. You should always look for ways to help strangers. You need to LOOK or opportunities to show the love of Jesus to those that don't even know you. As we travel over these next several years, traveling from campground to campground, we need to be on the lookout to use our blessings for the Lord, even more than we have done in the past.

Dear Lord, You have not put me on this earth for my own purposes or for my own glory. You have put me here to serve others. You have put me here to bring glory to your kingdom. Forgive me for not showing YOUR LOVE to others. In order to bring others to you, they need to see YOUR LOVE in me. I need to follow your example in treating others with mercy, grace, and compassion. Help me to love my neighbor as myself. Use me today for YOUR PURPOSES, not my own. Amen!

Be still!

“Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:25‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/heb.12.25.nlt

Do you know people that just won’t stop talking? I know several people that never stop talking and it’s impossible to interject two words in the conversation. I have to admit, I can get that way myself. I always want the last word and I always have to make the last point. It’s not a quality I’m proud of. But, that character flaw is nothing compared to doing the same thing with God, the creator of all things. What kind of “faithful follower” am I if I don’t take the time to sit quietly and listen to the voice of God?

I think we all need to take more time listening, waiting, for the voice of the Lord. Yes, I hear his voice. Sometimes it’s as clear as the person sitting next to me. But, most often I hear his voice in other ways. Most often it is through my wife. The Lord uses this wonderful lady to speak to me. ( I wish I could say I always listen!) God uses other family and friends to speak to me. His spirit can take so many different forms. I often hear his voice through reading good Christian books and certainly I hear his voice through his own words in my Bible. But, you can’t just expect God to speak if you aren’t listening. You need to prayer yourself to listen. It take practice to “still” yourself, quiet your thoughts, empty your mind, and really get ready to listen. We all need to master the challenging art of listening to the Lord.

Dear Lord, help me to hear your kind, loving voice. Give me a spirit willing to stop and listen. Help me be in tune with your thoughts and make them my own. There are so many distractions. Please, Lord,  filter them out so I can listen to you, the creator of all things. I want nothing more than to serve you and follow your path for my life. Be still my soul! Amen!

Supply and Demand

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:19‬ ‭KJV‬‬
http://bible.com/1/php.4.19.kjv

The Law of Supply and Demand says that the supply of a product is directly related to the price and the demand for that product. In my faith walk I have noticed God has a different Law of Supply and Demand. He supplies everything and only demands our faith in him. The price was paid through the cross by his son, Jesus.

God has always supplied all that I need and so much more.

As Stephanie and I continue to work toward our move date, we continue to down size so we can fit into our “Tiny Home”. It’s amazing how much stuff we have and how when we really look closely,  most of it is meaningless. An abundance of clothes,  tools, nic-nacs, pictures, furniture have taken up space in our home. They have been provided to us as a gift from the Lord. As we look closely at what we have it is apparent we have so much more than we need. Downsizing isn’t as hard as what I expected.

God has supplied my life with an abundance. But foremost on that list of “abundance” is the love, friendships, grace, and mercy I receive every day. God has filled my life with a wonderful family and joy that’s unending. He has supplied everything and I have never suffered for want of anything. I praise the Lord he supplies and am humbled he expects nothing in return. It just makes me want to serve him more and more each day.

Three days!

“For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭2:11-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/tit.2.11-12.nlt

The excitement is building. Only kids and teachers would understand. Well, I guess most of you should understand since you’ve been through it yourself. The end of the school year, the excitement of warm summer days, sleeping in, fun, relaxation, are just three short days away. In our country this cyclical event is a precious moment in time. We have a group of seniors looking forward to life outside the bounds of the schoolhouse and most are excited to see what the future holds. Some are nervous and many are uncertain. Our seniors, and certainly all of our students are looking forward to the change that summer brings to our lives and writing a new chapter is always an amazing adventure.

In three short days, we can start the 365 day count down to the end of our career as educators. I am wonderfully excited to see what happens next. Just like the summertime, I look forward with excitement to our future. I have no idea what it might hold. But, I do know we will do everything we can to live with wisdom, righteousness, and devoted to God. Nothing else matters. We can’t do it on our own, it’s only through the saving grace of our Lord that we gain ANY wisdom or righteousness. I praise the Lord for a wonderful life full of twists, turns, and changes that appear around every corner.

The Greats!

“All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised. For God had something better in mind for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:39-40‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/heb.11.39-40.nlt

When I leave this Earth, I hope I am remembered for one thing ..... My Faith. If that’s the only legacy I have, I’m quite ok with it. Reading Hebrews 11 is so nostalgic for me. Even though the writer is listing the greats from the Old Testament, I have a few greats in my own life that have led to my current walk with the Lord. Certainly my own Father ranks up there in my list of greats. My grandfather and his church planting, mission spirit is also a key to my love of the Lord. But, I have so many pastors, friends, and relatives to show me the ways of righteousness. We will all meet in Glory!

Dear Lord, I praise you for the “Greats” you have placed in my life. I am thankful for their own faithfulness, there love and dedication to teaching me about you. I pray as earnestly as I can that I too will lead others that come my way. I hope I can inspire their faith and be a GREAT to them . I am touched that you cared so much for me and my life that you would send so many to guide my path. You are truly amazing! Amen!

Stay away from Controversy

“And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ.”
‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/phm.1.6.nlt

I read an interesting devotion today. Here is a quote —

“There are issues today that get people stirred up. Some issues can get Christians so riled up they stop acting like Christians. A person’s relationship with Christ is more important than their view on any other important issue of our day. We should help people come to Christ and encourage Christians to do the right thing without making some other issue the focus of our lives. “ author unknown.

I couldn’t agree more. Slavery was the issue Paul talked about. He never endorsed slavery and can be quoted as being firmly against it. But, he was more interested in fighting for the eternal lives of slaves and slave owners than fighting for a cause. I am strongly against abortion, gay marriage, and countless other issues. But, my witness, turning hearts to the Lord are SOMUCH more important than fighting for a cause. How can we earn the right to share the gospel with the lost when we vilify them and show so much ungodly hate toward them. Yes, we hate the sin, but we better Love the Sinner and love them with the heart of Jesus.

Dear Lord, forgive me for putting you second in my life behind so many things including Just Causes. Help me to focus on sharing your love with everyone equaly, regardless of our disagreements. The world needs you and we need to keep the doors open to share that message in places that are dark and full of sin. We love you Lord and praise your holy name forever! Amen!

Fear not!

“For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭2:11-14‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/tit.2.11-14.nlt

Sometimes it’s hard to live in this evil world. Sometimes I just want to curl up in a corner and wait until Jesus takes me home. But, we are called to live amongst such evil with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God. So, I will focus on that instead of the sin all around us.

Satan would like nothing more that to get me to live in fear and cower from this world. If he can get us Christians to hide in our churches and our homes, refusing to venture out to share the gospel, he has won. Unfortunately that is what many of us do and even when we do venture out into this world at work, or school, or at community events, we hide our faith like it’s a plague.

Lord, help us to share your light in this dark world. So many times in your word you tell us to “fear not”, yet we are paralyzed with our fears of persecution or looking different. You have called us to be set apart from the world, not because of how great we are, but how great you are. Please fill us with your spirit. Help us to boldly go out into this world and share your mercy and grace. Forgive us for our lack of confidence in you and your perfect protection. Guide us to those people who need your message the most. We love you and honor you on this day. Amen!

Clear mind!

“But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:5‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/2ti.4.5.nlt

Sometimes my mind just won’t shut down. I am a thinker. I’m a planner and yes, I’m a worrier. It’s amazing what horrors you can create in your mind. From hopeless scenarios to joyous celebrations, my mind can take any situation to an extreme. I love the gift I have of being able to organize, plan, and analyze just about anything. But, there also times where it’s a curse and turns into an obsession.

We are just about done with the school year and I am looking forward to the change in daily routine. I am so blessed to have the summers to rest, relax, and renew my thoughts. As I focus on motorcycle ministry, family, and times with God, it is a great way to clear my mind. We all need times to clear our thoughts.

Dear Lord, take my thoughts and make them yours. Free me from the obsession of needing everything neatly planned and organized. As we end this school year, please give Stephanie and I a time to rest, relax, and renew our hearts for you. Clear our minds of the clutter of life and fill our minds with the things from above. I love you Lord with all my heart. I praise you for the countless blessings I receive every day! Amen!

Looking back, to push on!

“This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭1:15-16‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/1ti.1.15-16.nlt

You have no idea how patient the Lord has been with me. I look back on my life and am in wonder over how dumb I’ve been. I remember my first experience as a youth leader at our church (many, many years ago). I can’t remember what scripture I was teaching. I do remember that one of the youth called me out on how I was using the scripture. In reality, he was right and I was wrong. You see, while I was one of our youth leaders on Sunday evenings, my life the other 6 days a week was far from God’s word. Most of my early life as a young married father was filled with profession of faith but far from faith in practice. My priorities were work, my employees, and socializing with them. I look back at that time with regret at how much time I lost with my kids, my wife, and most importantly, with the Lord.

Yes, God has been patient with me. He filled me with his spirit and finally I listened. He could have given up. He didn’t. He put people in my life to direct me closer to him. He sent people like that young man in our youth group, to call me out and help me realize how really weak my faith was. I praise him for his grace, mercy, and love for this sinner. I can never repay that patience. I can only serve him right here and right now. There’s no turning back. I can only push forward learning from all my failings in the past.

i can see clearly now

“If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭29:18‬ ‭MSG‬‬
http://bible.com/97/pro.29.18.msg

I remember a song from my youth that went something like this: “I can see clearly now the rain has gone. I can see all obstacles in my way......” The older and wiser I get, the clearer my path becomes. I see obstacles before me and it is easier to avoid the pitfalls of  sin.

God’s presence in my life is so clear. I just don’t understand how people survive this life without God. It is so evident his mighty hand and how deeply involved he is in my daily affairs. There is no such thing as mere chance when it comes to my life. God has ordained every step and he has orchestrated a life filled with joy, just for me. The greatest aspect of this God designed life is that he does it despite my efforts to get off the path. When I stay on his path, listen to his direction, I see the greatest blessings, the greatest joy in my life. When I am “in tune” with the Lord’s presence I can see clearly into the future.

I have a vision of my future. For the past year God has given me a new path. As I trust him more and more, that new path becomes clearer and clearer. Reading the word of the Lord, praying, taking time to be open to his voice has very practical applications in our lives. It is through each of these spiritual disciplines that God speaks to us, directs us and fills us with his wisdom in order to make good decisions. As we fill our lives with good, God directed, decisions, we will be blessed beyond our wildest dreams. I am living proof. It’s not that all my choices are perfect and I am still prone to “sin filled” decisions at times. The older I get, I rely on the Lord more, the more wisdom I acquire, and the better decisions I make. Praise God for his mighty hand directing my path.

Time

“Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26:40-41‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/mat.26.40-41.

Yesterday at church our pastor talked about our busyness. It is so true. Our lives are so packed with “stuff” that we find little time for our most important relationship, with our Father in Heaven. We don’t spend time in prayer. We don’t study the word. We don’t spend time in worship all because we are so busy. I think the disciples were so busy they were exhausted. And just couldn’t stay awake and pray with Jesus at this crucial moment.

Sound familiar? I can’t count the number of times I have fallen asleep during my evening prayer time. For that matter, I also have fallen asleep before I even started to pray. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak!

One phrase that I will never forget from the sermon yesterday was

“If the devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy!”

It is so much easier to get us occupied with life that we forget, or just get to busy, to spend time with the Lord! We end up becoming “Crisis Christians”. We wonder why we go through so many trials in life. Maybe God wants to spend time with us so bad that he creates these moments of crisis that we might turn to him. Maybe if we scheduled God into our day on a more frequent basis, our times of crisis would disappear.

Dear Lord, forgive me that I get so busy I forget to spend time with you. I love you and don’t mean to toss you aside so easily. Please give me strength and the will to overcome my weaknesses to spend more time with you. I am humbled at your patience with me and the blessings you provide each day even though I give you so little of my time. Forgive me Lord, Amen!

To the Mom’s in my life

“Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:1-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/php.2.1-5.nlt

I really only have one mom. She’s awesome. However, I do have a lot of mom’s in my life. My wife is a great mom to my three daughters, I have two daughters that are mom’s and I have a granddaughter who is a mom to be within the next month. I deal with mom’ of my students and many of my motorcycle friends are mom’s. While I’m sure there are moms out there that are not as described in these verses, I sure can’t think of any. The ones that are closest to me definitely fit this scripture. It’s like this scripture was God appointed specifically for Mom.

While I belive God appointed men as the HEAD of the family, the hands, feet, arms, legs, and certainly the HEART of the family is the mom. Moms keep the family together. They are the unity of spirit. I can not think of more tender and compassionate people than the Moms in my life. They unite our families through all the trials, busy schedules, and chaos of daily life. The sacrifices my mom, my wife, and my daughters make for their families has been nothing less than miraculous. They are selfless and have one thing in mind ...... service to their family. They are humble servants to the Lord first, but their families are next. I can say all of them, from my mother, to my wife, to my daughters have an attitude of Christ. They would do everything, sacrifice ALL for the well being of their families. Yes, these verses were written about Moms.

Happy Mother’s Day to the greatest of the greats in our world. I praise God for your love and devotion. I praise God for my mother and the sacrifices she had made for me, the great Godly example she set, and her unending love. I praise my Lord for a wonderful wife who loves her daughters and grandkids with all her heart and treats my like gold. I am also so thankful her daughters are following her example as they raise their own kids and tackle life’s challenges. I ask a special blessing on you as we celebrate and honor all of you today!

Happy a Mother’s Day,

A cheap imitation!

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us. For you know that you ought to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you.”
‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭3:6-7‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/2th.3.6-7.nlt

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Do you want people to copy your life?

It’s kind of a strange question. But, as a believer in Christ we are to be an example for others. So I ask, are you a good example for others? If someone dug into your life how deep would your faith go? Are you a “Cheap Imitation of Christ?” Or are you a genuine Christian filled with the love of the Gospel message? I think all these questions are interconnected. Paul was confident in his faith walk and that he wanted others to follow his example. For me, I don’t quite have that confidence but am feeling better about it every day.

You may not want to be an example for others to live by. Most of the time, that’s not your choice. When I wear my Christian Motorcyclists Association Backpatch, I declare I am a follower of a Christ and “look at me this is the life the Lord wants you to live!” That is a challenging opportunity. It is one that through my own strength and will I can not do it well.  With Christ it IS possible.

Lord, guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions that I would be an example to others. Help me to model all your perfect ways. Let others see clearly your love, your mercy, and your grace, through every waking hour of my life. I praise you for my life. It is only by your hand that I am where I am today. Amen!

Goals!

“For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/1th.2.4.nlt

A few months ago I learned a new term from my students. “Goals”. I thought I knew what it meant but teenagers have modified the definition. Mrs Rhoades and I are “Goals”. Later I learned I should be flattered because for all practical purposes it means they want to be like us.

My one goal in life is to please God. I want God to be proud of me, my thoughts, my words and my actions. That’s a tall order considering I am the sinner that I am. I mess up. But, I am so happy that the Lord examines my motives.  While I am far from perfect , my God knows my heart and he knows my reasons. I truly am trying to lead a life worthy of the king.

It’s an honor to serve the Lord and all followers of Jesus need to recognize the privilege we have of serving and sharing the gospel message. So many times we take it for granted the call we have to share the gospel. God does not just entrust anyone with the message of salvation. Therefore, I need to act like it. I need to humble myself in service to the Lord first and then to others. I need to stay in constant communication from the leader of my life. I need to hear and act on his direction. I have the choice to follow his path. I need to stay humble, check my motives and live with his voice guiding my steps.

Its not about me, again.

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭2:1-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God is reminding me more and more that it’s not about me. He has to do this quite often and sometimes he needs to snack me to remind me.

I reinstituted my prayer list a little over a month ago. Sometimes it gets boring to prayer for the same things over and over again. It does help me to remember it’s not just about me. When I don’t use my prayer list it seems like I spend more time focusing on me. After all, it’s easy to remember my prayer concerns . Sure I prayfor my family all the time. It’s also easy to know their concerns. But other than that it was all about me. I have 63 seperate concerns on m prayer list right now, 52 of them are for other people and only 11 are about me. That just wouldn’t happen without writing things down. I can also tell you, from experience, it is really difficult to remove something from the list. I think that is good because people often pray for events that are occurring right now, but after the initial event or concern, the thought fades. A prefect example is a couple of families I am praying for that have lost loved ones from suicide. The deaths accurred a couple of months ago. I am sure they still need prayer.

God wants us to pray for others, often, and continuously. It’s not wrong to pray for our own concerns or praise God for what he’s done, but we need to pray for others. We might be the only one praying for them. Pray, focus on others, without ceasing!

Great Expectations!

“Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭5:3‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/psa.5.3.nlt

It is great being in a routine of praying. As I mentioned a couple of days ago Stephanie and I have been praying together and fasting from social media in the mornings. I have been writing my blog more consistently and I have been maintaining my prayer list more faithfully. Do you want to know what I’m discovering ? I am waiting “expectantly” for the answers. God is amazing. Some people might not attribute my life as answers to prayer. But I know myself and I know the hand of God when I see it!

Yesterday we got a miracle answer to prayer. Without going into great detail, we got an answer to prayer that could have saved us about $3000. It was a miracle because a week ago there was no way and yesterday it happened anyway.

I have a huge prayer list, mostly filled with friends and family requests. I wait not HOPING the Lord will answer. I wait EXPECTANTLY, knowing he will answer and always in amazing ways. I wonder how many great, miraculous answers to prayer I have missed in my lifetime because I wasn’t in a regular routine of meeting with God. It turns out, it’s the most important part of the day.

Dear Lord, I praise you for answered prayer. I see your love for me , every day. I’m humbled that you would love a sinner just like me! Guide my ways today and everyday that I might please you with my service to others. Continue to direct my path, send me to those who need your love. I praise and honor you Lord, with everything that is within me!

Look at what God has done!

“But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.”
‭‭Daniel‬ ‭6:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/dan.6.10.nlt

In my devotion this morning the author Mark Batterson mentioned this scene in the book of Daniel. It is such a powerful message to all of us. First of all it demonstrates the consistency of Daniels prayer life. It speaks to his conviction. Even though prayer was outlawed, he was not to be separated from his relationship with God. But, I also noticed something. It said he prayed giving thanks. We often forget that Daniel was in captivity. Sure he earned prominence in this small country, but it was at the hands of his captors. Yet, his prayers were filled with thanksgiving, a great example for me.

Look at what God has done!

God has blessed me abundantly. I don’t repeat that enough. I have an amazing family. My life is filled with love and always has been. I have never gone without food and have had it abundantly. I have always had a safe place to rest my head at night. I have been blessed with dear friends and family. My life is filled with joy. God has protected me from harm and even in my darkest hours I have never lost hope. God has been with me. These things are nothing to trifle at. I deserve so much less, yet God has providided so much more. I praise you Lord! I am humbled by your love and will always honor the sacrifice of your precious son who died a painful death on a cross for me and to save the world.

Results!

“Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:12-13‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/php.2.12-13.nlt

Yesterday, CMA got to show the results of their salvation. We held our annual “Run for the Son” . This event is all for the glory of the Lord. It is about raising funds to share the gospel around the world. It is about helping our great ministry partners share bibles in hostile countries, showing the Jesus film and providing transportation to missionaries. I praise the Lord for a great celebration of his love and to get a chance to help serve.

I want nothing more than to serve the Lord. I know that feeling deep within my soul is from the Lord himself and I want him to continue to fill me with the desire to serve him. I want him to send his Holy Spirit to my grandkids, kids, friends, and relatives. Fill them with a desire to do what pleases you. They don’t need power, position, or stuff from this earth. All they need is your love, mercy, and grace. Dear Lord, supply them with your guidance every day they walk with you!

I love my routine!

I am a man of routine. I get up every morning at 5:30, check my emails, social media, the weather, and the news that happened over night. I weigh my self, check my blood sugar, shave if I need to, make my lunch for school, eat one piece of toast, one glass of orange juice with two table spoons of apple cider vinegar, pour my coffee, read my Bible, write my devotional, turn on the news, check on my social media, pray and head out to my day. It’s the same thing every day. When I come home, I get a snack, take a nap, watch tv, shower, pray, go to bed and start over the next day. I love my routine.

But, Stephanie and I committed that while our house was up for sale, we would fast and pray. We are not fasting from food, but we are fasting from morning social media, news, and anything else that’s not directly associated with the Lord. We also committed to focused prayer time and a time to pray together. My routine has changed and it’s been hard! Not that I don’t enjoy the extra time with the Lord, not that I don’t covet the time I have praying with Stephanie, I just struggle breaking my routine.

I miss my Fox News in the morning, I miss checking on social media when I wake up. I truly think I’m addicted! But, we are breaking our routine with one thing in mind, drawing closer to the Lord and being  in tune with his call in our lives. Even though it’s been harder than I expected, I have loved it. The Lord is moving in our lives and focusing on prayer, the word of the Lord, and hearing his voice is worth every minute of sacrifice.

Remain calm!

“But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.””
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭14:13-14‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/exo.14.13-14.nlt

Stay Calm? The huge, powerful army of Pharoah was about to attack. Stay Calm?

Lat night I went to work on our new Fifth wheel home. I haven’t been able to start the generator. I came prepared. I had new plugs, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, air filter, a supply of good gas, and carb cleaner. I meticulously went through step by step, everything was going great. Then I got a little bit of a rumble. We were close! Then more and longer. Then finally a rough running, but running generator. I was so excited! Then catastrophe! Boom! Something broke!

Just remain calm!

What? How could this be? I might have just cost myself $4000! How could I remain calm?

Why Lord? Aren’t you directing us to debt free living? How does this help?

REMAIN CALM? Are you kidding?

God led the Israelites out of Egypt and straight into a trap to be attacked by Pharoahs army! But, God had other plans! A miracle was about to take place! God always has a plan!

So, the massive 5500watt generator is in the back of my truck. I take it to get fixed today! Praying for a miracle!

Perfect!

““Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open: “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭3:7-8‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/rev.3.7-8.nlt

It has been nearly a year. A door was closed on May 24th, 2018 and a multitude of different doors were opened. I remember the date so vividly. It was a turning point in my life and it came through a
lot of pain. It took more than five months to see what God was doing. Now I am so happy those doors were closed. I have to admit I was pretty angry with God and so many other people. At the time I felt attacked and thought that God was nowhere to be found. These attacks brought a much needed change in my life plans. This assault was allowed, maybe even orchestrated for my own good. God was in the midst of the pain.

Do we trust a God or not? Do I trust him enough to accept NO as the answer to my prayers? Am I just satisfied with my life if it follows MY plans? Or, do I trust God, have I really turned my life over to him?

My loving Heavenly Father has a perfect plan for my life. He knows my needs and my wants before they even leave my mind. Yet, he is confident in the plan he has for me.  Nothing can get in the way of that plan, even me!

Dear Lord, I truly rededicate my life to your service. I renew my request that you come into my life, direct my steps. Direct my thoughts and direct my actions. I want nothing more than to serve you and follow you. I praise you for unanswered prayers and a more perfect way!

Stepping into the River

“The Lord told Joshua, “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses. Give this command to the priests who carry the Ark of the Covenant: ‘When you reach the banks of the Jordan River, take a few steps into the river and stop there.’””
‭‭Joshua‬ ‭3:7-8‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/jos.3.7-8.nlt

I have no idea what plans God has for Stephanie and I in our future. I literally have no idea. But, we have been prompted to free ourselves of ties that bind us and be open to what may come down our path. It’s backwards. I would much rather know where the goal is and Then make plans to meet the goal. When I coached cross country we had one goal, to qualify as a team for regionals. It had never happened before and both our boys and girls drove themselves to achieve that goal. We prepared practiced, gave up long hours in the summer and sacrificed to reach the goal. But now, here I am reaching for a goal I can’t define. Strangely enough, I am just as driven toward this unseen target as I was that elusive regional birth.

I never realized this verse until reading today. The Lord asked Joshua to have the priests step into the water before he parted the Jordan River. He didn’t tell them why. They had no idea what was about to happen. They just did it. So, our house is sold. We are continuing to pair down our stuff and “stepping into the river”, letting God make the next move. He had the perfect plan for our lives, and yours. Just let him do what he does best, care for his children!

Just Enough, Just In Time

“But when they measured it out, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough. Each family had just what it needed. Then Moses told them, “Do not keep any of it until morning.””
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭16:18-19‬ ‭NLT‬‬
http://bible.com/116/exo.16.18-19.nlt

What do you think of when you think of being blessed? Most of us would think of our families, friends, jobs, maybe our homes, food on the table, and the stuff we have in our lives. Yes, I have been blessed with all of those things in abundance. In the Book, The Circle Maker, Mark Batterson talks about our blessings. Two thoughts struck me. The first is that blessings do not always make us feel comfortable, and the second, God always provides just enough.

God wants the best for us and he greatly desires a relationship with us. He wants us to be dependent upon him so we draw closer. Blessings do that. So, blessings my create a challenge. As blessings stretch us, we grow and we usually grow closer to the Lord. Comfortable things make us less dependent. So, many times the stresses in my life are not to harm me, but to bless me. Anything that turns me to the Lord, even the pains and trials of life, are pure blessing. We need to grow and growth can be painful.

God also knows our needs. He provides. Sometimes he provides just enough. Most of the time he doesn’t give us extra. He wants us to continually turn to him. If he would have given Israel a years supply of manna, they would have forgotten him throughout that year. So he made them dependent on him daily. If I would be blessed with a million dollars, would I be more dependent on the Lord?

God provides me enough and he doesn’t always make it easy. I am uncomfortable so that I have to turn to him. He always provides just enough, just in time! Praise God for his love, mercy, and grace,Amen!
