Are you a Prophet?

Luke 1:67-69 (New International Version, ©2010)

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: 68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a horn[a] of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David

Like father like son. John is a Prophet of God and Zechariah is a Prophet of God. This message coming from Zechariah is very specific in what is going to happen through Jesus. Jesus is God coming to his people to save them from their sins.  He was brought here as a horn (strong and powerful king). He will redeem (purchase) all of us with his blood on the cross.

I am always fascinated by Prophecy and really I am not familiar with what it is. I know in a limited way that when someone prophecies, he/she is foretelling the future. But in my investigation. Prophecy is also any sharing of words that God has put on your heart. This prophecy from Zechariah is both a foretelling of the future Messiah and also a sharing of the heart of God.
God still sends people to prophesy today. I don't know too many people who tell the future, but I do know several people who are spokesmen of God. Really, they might be telling the future but how are we going to know until the future happens. But, It is a lot easier to tell someone who is speaking the words of God's heart. That too is Prophecy.  We can look back on these words of Zechariah and NOW we know he was foretelling the future. At the time, these people didn't really know what he was telling.

As Christians it is our place to listen for the words of God from many different places. I always point to the Bible and I think the Bible is so important in listening to God. Prayer is also just as important. Not Babbling to God, but opening ourselves to hearing God speak to us specifically. But, we also need to listen for the words of God through his Modern Day Prophets. We need to listen to the words of God through others. We don't label all our preachers as Prophets. But, some of them are. Shouldn't we be listening to those Prophets just as much as these people were listening to Zechariah. God speaks to us all the time, we just have to be open to listening.

God, Please open our ears to hear your voice. Open our hearts and minds to the Prophets you send to us every day. We know you are speaking to us. I pray lord that you will give us the ability and desire to hear you. Amen!
