2 Corinthians 3
New International Version (NIV)
As Athletic Director for a High School, I get asked to write quite a few letters of recommendation for students. If a student comes to ask me, it usually means he/she knows me and I know them pretty well. Most of the time I love writing them. Sometimes, it's not easy. I don't like students asking me at the last minute for a letter of recommendation, because I really believe in taking time to write a thoughtful letter.
Are you a good letter of reference for God? I know that's a strange question. But, when people see you as a follower of Christ, are you a good reference. When I write a letter of reference, I have a process I go through. I like to look at how hard a student worked in the class room. I like to hear what coaches and teachers say about their effort. I like to go to practices and observe how hard an athlete works. I want to know what type of servant the student-athlete is. I want to see them interact with other students, teachers, and coaches. What type of relationship do they have with their parents and their community?
As we go about our daily lives, people are also observing us. As Christians we are being watched constantly. People want to see how we react to stress. People want to see how we deal with relationships. They want to see how hard we work for our Lord. What kind of value do we give to our faith? They don't look at your attendance at church. They don't listen to your words. They look at your actions.
Our actions are a letter of recommendation for a relationship with Christ. Do people say, I want to have what he has? Or, do they say if that's what a Christian is, I want nothing to do with it. You are God's letter of reference. What kind of reference are you?
